A Great Tour of a Magnificent Facility

This morning, I had the pleasure of taking a tour of the Sunlow distribution facility and test kitchen here in the city of Atlanta. In doing so, I witnessed some of the latest and greatest from the best names in commercial kitchen equipment. These names include Amana, Imperial Range, SaniServ, Alto-Shaam, CMA Dishmachines, and Hoshizaki. We also took this time to cook up some great food and make it not only informative, but fun.

This was a wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge and spread that knowledge to our great customers through a series of videos that will be appearing very soon on ACityDiscount.com and on ACityDiscount's Channel on YouTube. We want to make our customers the most informed when making decisions for their business, and there is no better way than with a video explaining the features that are included in this great equipment. Making Camp Cooking More Enjoyable w/ Lodge & Pigtail

Where has the summer gone? September is now upon us and for many of us we are getting closer to a football and camping mindset as the weather begins to cool. That means that it is also time to break out the grill for family get-togethers and outings. Lodge has made it incredibly easy to combine great cuisine with our favorite autumn activities, while PigTail makes the sometimes frustrating battle of flipping and serving your creations a snap.

I had the opportunity to test the Lodge Sportsman's Grill while grilling for some family members, and it was an absolute pleasure. Assembly took virtually no time at all, with the toughest operation being fitting two nut/bolt combinations on the underside of this sturdy unit. Once I filled it with charcoal (perhaps overfilled... you be the judge) and lit the briquettes, we were underway.

The menu consisted of pork medallions and links of applewood chicken sausage. The grill handled 4 medallions and 4 sausage links with absolute ease. Cooking time was fairly quick on the cast iron grill, and the results were spectacular as you can see on the enclosed video. You can also see on this video from another reviewer that the results were equally as good.

Granted, while this process was incredibly easy, it was made even EASIER with the PigTail Food Flipper. We had no need for any forks, tongs, or any other traditional barbecue tool. This long thin metal rod with an appropriately described pigtail hook at the top was nothing short of miraculous. The pork chops flipped with little-to-no effort, and the sausages did the same. Now, we all know that you shouldn't puncture sausages while they are cooking, since you sacrifice the juices and flavor, we did it simply to show off this great tool. We also experimented the next night with some large steak fillets with equally magnificent results. If you can't take my word for it, check out the PigTail review on BettyCrocker.com.

In closing, I had a great time grilling out with my brother and his fiancee with these fun new tools. I am getting one for myself to take to my next tailgate and I am sure with the amount of food that this little grill can hold, I will turn a few heads. I can't wait for football season!

Overcoming the Obstacles

Eager to get your business on eBay up and running?
Here's how to clear these 9 common hurdles to runaway success.

Believe it or not, most of today's Titanium and Platinum-level eBay Power-Sellers were once small-time operators. Although they generate hundreds of thousands--even millions--of dollars in sales each year now, many of them started as one-person businesses, often listing individual items from their attics or basements.

Why are some eBay sellers able to achieve PowerSeller status while others struggle to be profitable? The difference is in how they tackle the obstacles every eBay seller faces. Those who face the challenges head-on ultimately create high-volume ventures, while those who don't generally hit a sales plateau beyond which they simply can't move.

Andrew Fullmer, eBay top seller account manager who consults with the largest sellers of technology, and Elizabeth Ferguson, eBay top seller account manager who consults with Trading Assistants, witness the struggle every day. From their experience working with hundreds of sellers at all levels, they have identified nine obstacles that frequently stand in the way of major success on eBay. Overcoming them leads to higher sales and higher profitability.

1. Product Sourcing
Finding products to sell in quantity is the most common obstacle, according to both Fullmer and Ferguson. "People start with what they have in their wardrobe," says Ferguson, but they have no experience setting up and selling in an online store. While selling off articles of designer clothing you've grown tired of is a great way to clear out your closet and generate a little cash, once your closet is bare, you need to investigate new sources of merchandise.

First, you need to decide what you're going to sell, says Fullmer. What will you offer, and where will you buy it for resale? Locating a reputable manufacturer, distributor or wholesaler who can supply all you need is a sizable obstacle.

Ferguson recommends attending industry trade shows to identify suppliers or, rather than having to invest in inventory for resale, becoming a Trading Assistant so you can charge a commission for selling other people's castoffs. To be included in the Trading Assistant Directory and have access to Trading Assistant marketing materials, you must have: 1) sold at least 10 items during the previous three months; 2) a feedback score of 100 or higher; 3) 97 percent positive feedback or higher; and 4) an eBay account in good standing. 2. Knowing What You Sell
Another related obstacle is product knowledge. "Choose something you're knowledgeable in. Don't sell technology products if you have no background in technology," advises Ferguson. "If you know nothing about a product other than that it's popular, that's not a great place to start." Yet Ferguson says she finds many sellers in this situation--"someone who's currently selling Barbies but who's considering switching to computers."

If you have an interest or background in Barbie dolls, for example, it would be wiser to branch out into selling toys than to enter an entirely new, unfamiliar market. Or if you're selling designer clothing, branch out into shoes or handbags. By staying focused on a particular merchandise category, you can develop an expertise that will make listing and pricing easier, not to mention making higher-volume selling possible.

John Stack, 55, CEO of Peach Trader Inc. (eBay User ID: acitydiscount) in Atlanta, has sold used restaurant equipment since 1973 and began selling on eBay in 1999. A Titanium PowerSeller today, which means he generates at least $150,000 in sales each month, Stack expanded his business into new restaurant equipment a few years ago, sticking with what he knows well.

3. Volume Selling
By the same token, becoming a successful seller on eBay also requires volume--more products for sale and more sales. While gaining experience selling single items you no longer want is an excellent way to learn eBay's ins and outs, unless you're specializing in a particular category--china, children's clothing or MP3 players, for example--"it will be difficult to get to the next level," says Fullmer. "You need to focus on volume."

Limiting your focus to one or two product categories enables you to more quickly list the items for sale, have the appropriate-size shipping containers on-hand and be more profitable because you know your basic costs.

4. Inventory Management
Understanding how eBay works and what tools are available to assist you in doing more business is important for long-term success, says Fullmer. And one of the most important aspects of running your business on eBay is effective inventory management.

A case in point is Saberpoint (eBay User ID: saberpoint), based in New York City, which sells cell phones and accessories. The company turned to eBay as a means of selling outdated stock, starting with 10 to 20 pieces a day at first, says partner Ken Engel, 47. But that number quickly accelerated as Engel and his business partner, Ajay Bhumitra, 50, struggled to keep up with demand. Sales climbed to $300,000 in the first four months, creating a whole new set of challenges.

"We faced a lot of problems [early on] because we never expected [the merchandise] to sell so well," Engel says. For starters, Saberpoint was using a retail system to manage its inventory, but it wasn't set up for online sales. So the partners wrote their own inventory management software to be sure it would meet all their needs.

That inventory management system generates a report each morning listing sales levels and inventory projections for the next three days, based on current demand. "That tells us what we need to buy," explains Engel. So if a certain cell phone model has been selling at a rate of 50 per day and Saberpoint has 50 in its inventory, Engel and his team know they need to buy 150 phones to meet current levels of demand for the next three days (50 phones per day multiplied by three days). Accurately matching a supply of merchandise to constantly changing demand levels is tricky and, for larger sellers, couldn't be done without inventory management software.

For companies not interested in or willing to write their own software, there are several inventory management programs currently available through eBay, listed under "Selling Tools" on the eBay Site Map. Also found in the "Selling Tools" section is a link to the eBay Solutions Directory, which provides information on services from third-party companies that allow sellers additional resources to further manage their business growth. Examples of such third parties are ChannelAdvisor, Channel Velocity, Infopia, Kyozou, Marketworks and Vendio.

5. Familiarity with eBay's Trust and Safety Policies
To protect both buyers and sellers, eBay has well-defined policies regarding what items can and cannot be sold on the site. Sellers should become very familiar with which items are forbidden so as to avoid investing in merchandise that cannot be listed for sale.

Some types of products are illegal, such as merchandise made from endangered species, while others may be legal to own but are not permitted to be sold on eBay, such as guns. And others may be listed on eBay, but only if the seller meets certain criteria, as in the case of the new PlayStation 3 systems released in 2006--sellers could list them for sale as long as they had a certain level of positive feedback and had the item in hand.

From time to time, National Products Sales Inc. (eBay User ID: nps), based in Salt Lake City, is affected by these policies, although the company doesn't necessarily disagree with them. NPS was founded in 1969 by Kelly Farmer to create a retail market for misdirected, unclaimed or damaged freight from shipping and transportation companies.

Because the company frequently buys merchandise secondhand, it doesn't always know which products are authentic and which are not, explains Brad Auernig, 28, who manages the company's eBay sales. To avoid posting listings for items that are prohibited on eBay, the company takes the time to authenticate brand-name items it has acquired. Before listing an item, says Auernig, "we do a lot of research on our own."

6. Research
In addition to researching what types of products are on eBay's prohibited list, which you can find by searching for the phrase "prohibited items" in the "Help" section of the site, research what prices products like yours are selling for, says Ferguson.

Knowing what price merchandise is selling for helps you know what to buy, and for how much, in order to make money on eBay. Other facts to research include which keywords buyers are using to get to your products. Are there other terms you're not currently including in your listing titles that your competitors are? Use as many different terms as you can to attract the largest number of potential buyers.

One of the best resources to research pricing and popular products is eBay's own Hot List, which is available in Seller Central and details which products in each major eBay category are selling best. Seller Central can be found by clicking on the "Sell" tab on top of any eBay page and scrolling to the footer for the link. You can also do a Completed Listings search from the "Advanced Search" page on eBay to see how much items sold for in the past two weeks. For a much more extensive look at recently completed listings, you can use eBay Marketplace Research, which allows you to look for products sold on eBay up to 90 days ago.

7. Confidence in the Marketplace
Just as eBay has policies and procedures in place to build trust within its community (such as the feedback system), sellers also have to have confidence that the market can determine the price for an item.

Stack, for instance, was initially skeptical that restaurant equipment listed for a fraction of its true value would ultimately sell at a profit, so when he posted his first items--250 commercial coffee makers--for sale on eBay, he used a Reserve Price of about $150. They didn't sell. So he tried again, this time listing the coffee makers for a starting bid of $25. They sold like hot cakes, most for $150 to $200. "I needed confidence in the marketplace," says Stack. "Now I let the customer set the price." That means 95 percent of his used items are listed with a 99 cent starting bid.

Surprisingly, starting a listing at 99 cents generally yields better results than listing an item at a higher opening bid, even when the item is quite valuable. Stack remembers a huge walk-in cooler worth at least $10,000 that he decided to sell on eBay a few years ago. For two months, he listed it at $10,000, believing that was a reasonable price, yet he had no takers. Finally, he relisted it with a starting bid of 99 cents, and 10 days later it sold for $10,000.

However, a 99 cent starting bid shouldn't necessarily be your rule of thumb, says Ken Vilkin, 44, owner of Blue Moon Coins (eBay User ID: bluemooncoins) in Vancouver, Washington. Vilkin, who is a Titanium PowerSeller, recommends sellers test different price points. Especially with niche products, you may find you can keep your prices higher than your competition and still do well, he says. "[Competitors] tell us we get a lot more for the same coins than they're able to get."

8. General Business Knowledge
Although you certainly don't need an MBA to succeed on eBay, Fullmer has found that a basic understanding of financial management and reporting can be extremely helpful. Being able to calculate your total costs and know whether you're profitable or not can help keep you out of financial trouble. One way you can do this is with Sales Reports, a free tool offered to eBay sellers to track weekly and monthly sales trends.

"We pride ourselves on our strong financial department," says Engel. "We are extremely margin-conscious"--so much so that Saberpoint uses a number of resources to monitor what the market will bear. One of the company's favorites for tracking the average selling price of various cell phones on eBay is HammerTap, which helps Saberpoint calculate the average daily selling price (to know which days are potentially more profitable for listing items) and the conversion rate for all its listings (that is, the percentage of all listings that ended in a sale).

Many entrepreneurs can export such sales data into small-business accounting software, such as QuickBooks (which is supported on eBay through Accounting Assistant) or Microsoft Small Business Accounting, to better understand which products are profitable and which are not, says Engel. Another tool that can integrate eBay sales data and combine it with other selling platforms such as brick-and-mortar locations is KeepMore.net. KeepMore is a simple-to-use online solution that keeps track of your income and expenses. Use of tools like this can help sellers know and understand their complete bottom line for all avenues of selling product.

At Saberpoint, sales have grown more than 350 percent in the past year, suggesting that keeping a careful eye on the bottom line really does pay off.

9. Automation
A rudimentary understanding of how eBay works will get you pretty far, but getting to the next level--where you're making more money and having to invest less time and energy--requires that you automate as many processes as possible.

Once you begin ramping up the number of items you're selling, "make the most of your momentum," says Vilkin. He advises you to streamline the shipping process so you can get more done in less time--and make more money.

Finding Product Sources for Your Business: Companies can consider themselves lucky to have such mutually beneficial exchanges, but even expediency can't overcome price as the deciding factor in choosing a supplier. Negotiations are a tricky process of parry and thrust that only informed entrepreneurs can win.

Consider trade shows. Many exhibitors won't be appropriate trading partners because minimum order requirements are too high. Once you find suppliers who will sell at low volumes, work begins at setting a fair price. "Ask those vendors what their best price is, don't commit to it, then compare it to four or five others," says Bundy. "Then you'll know what the market price is." Submit a bid at that level, or test your luck and low-ball it. You can always sweeten the offer by paying 5 to 10 percent upfront and the rest c.o.d.

Most suppliers expect to haggle over price, but you should resist the urge to bargain down to the last nickel. A supplier who walks away feeling cheated probably won't be eager for more of your business. "I would not try to play the price war," says Sprong. "You're probably going to lose, and if you don't, it will be a one-time transaction."

When you're ready to buy, order as much as you can afford to warehouse if you're not using a drop-shipper. Restaurant Suppliers are volume-driven, and they offer a better price when more goods are moving. Try to order 10 percent more than your last order.

In some cases, paying less can be an advantage. "Sometimes I pay too much for something and too little for others," says Carson. Such flexibility helps build trust and positions the business relationship for the long term.

Points also go to companies that avoid burdening a contract with terms such as returns of unsold goods. "That's almost consignment sales," says Bundy. "Suppliers are not looking to take your risk."

Negotiating price with a supplier presents a Catch-22. Restaurant suppliers offer their best price to vendors who can make products move, while vendors say they can move more products when they get products cheaper. New companies also face the challenge of reassuring suppliers of their staying power. Stack recommends starting with local suppliers who can judge the legitimacy of your business firsthand, and starting with less pricey items that don't represent a huge risk to the wholesaler. The point is to create a track record. "Today, I have manufacturers approaching me to push their lines who had historically refused to sell to me," Stack says.

Demonstrating the advantage of selling on eBay adds to a company's negotiating strength. "You need to educate suppliers about the power of eBay," says Eric Crawford, a partner and co-founder of Essex Technology Group (eBay User ID: buyessex). "We explain that you can sell anything here."

This Nashville, Tennessee, company has its own way of reassuring suppliers. The company specializes in customer returns, overstock and discounted electronics and sells them on eBay on consignment, which means suppliers don't get paid until the items sell. Essex's proprietary tracking software lets suppliers track the status of each item from the time it leaves the warehouse to the moment the product is sold. "Most companies would be scared to send a truckload of product to any Tom, Dick or Harry," Crawford, 30, says. This way, suppliers can keep a close watch on their goods as well as their buyers.

The more reassurance a company provides, the better the business's long-term health. "Confidence," Crawford says, "is the hardest part of sourcing."

What's Your Worth?

You know your business on eBay is a sourcing success when you have Med1Online's problem. The company's inventory had grown so much, customers needed an easier way to find what they wanted.

Many items in the company's stock of sophisticated medical equipment have the same function, but individual features may vary from unit to unit. And those are the features that Med1Online's savvy customers wanted. Scrolling through a few choices is one thing, but when the options fall into the hundreds, says Scott Carson, president of Med1Online in Arvada, Colorado, "it's a whole 'nother enchilada." But attention to the process can be applied at any stage, either in the way a business leverages its products or in the quality of service and support after the sale.

"We tell customers exactly what is wrong," says Eric Crawford, a partner and co-founder of the Nashville, Tennessee-based company. Even then, faulty products usually find a buyer, because "people will try and fix them themselves," Crawford says, proving the adage that anything can sell on eBay.

Rail considered building his own shop--a proposition he estimates would have run him $750,000 and a hefty bank loan. On a whim, he looked on eBay (nasdaq: EBAY - news - people ) for equipment. He ended up outfitting an entire machine shop for $100,000.

'I can buy things off of eBay used that are still in great shape for 10 cents on the dollar,' says Rail, owner of the Gainsville, Ga., business Dedicated Digital Technology. 'I don't even think of going to a retail store now before I check out eBay.' He boasts of scoring $100,000 worth of metalworking equipment for just $1,500 from a shop that was going out of business, and says"

"It's all about saving an ungodly amount of money," adds Rail's partner, Greg Smith.

EBay formally launched its business and industrial marketplace site in January, creating a central location where enterprises can buy or sell anything from drill bits to dump trucks. On an annualized basis the site is already selling $1 billion worth of goods, according to eBay Business general manager Jordan Glazier. About 7% of the $14.8 billion worth of merchandise sold on eBay as a whole in 2002 was accounted for by business-to-business sales, half as big a share again as two years ago.

Big manufacturers like Motorola (nyse: MOT - news - people ) and Silicon Graphics (nyse: SGI - news - people ) have been using eBay for some time as a low-cost means of selling overstocked or obsolete inventory, but it is small- and medium-sized businesses that eBay sees as the growth engine for eBay Business.

Hundreds of thousands of companies large and small already use eBay for business transactions. While the increase in the number of small and medium-size businesses that sell to individual consumers has been key to driving eBay's growth, says Salomon Smith Barney analyst Lanny Baker, "if they can turn those small-business sellers into buyers on the site, that's a lot of purchasing power".

Unlike many of the now-defunct business-to-business brainstorms dating back to the dot-com era, eBay didn't establish its business marketplace and then try to recruit users. Instead, management began to notice a critical mass of business activity on eBay last year and decided to consolidate it at one place on the site.

EBay's colorful logo and graphics are hardly businesslike, and Glazier admits that most eBay business users stumble across business items when looking for something else--often a PC. EBay sold 1 million PC's last year--from used personal units to new ones from manufacturing giants like Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ), IBM (nyse: IBM - news - people ), Hewlett-Packard (nyse: HPQ - news - people ) and Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ).

Rather than relying on small-business owners in search of cheap PCs stumbling upon the business marketplaces, eBay is starting to promote its business marketplace systematically. It is running ads in trade magazines and visiting trade shows to get to know distributors--and with good reason.

"The average price point on eBay Business is several times that of the rest of the site," Glazier says. A piece of equipment for a physical-therapy practice can list at $25,995, while one piece of equipment in the pumps category lists at $150,000. Industrial sales have the same inexpensive listing fees that apply to items on the rest of the site, excluding cars and real estate. Posting a sale costs between 30 cents and $3.30.

But eBay also takes a cut of each business sale that ranges from 1.5% to 2.75% or 5.25%, correlating inversely to the final value of each item. If its $1 billion a year in business-to-business sales is realized, that alone could add roughly $33 million in commissions to the company's annual revenue ($1.2 billion in 2002).*

That number could mushroom. Some small companies are transformed once they start to do business on eBay. John Stack runs Peach Trader, which sells restaurant equipment. When he experimented with selling coffee makers online in 1999, he was a local Altanta-based business with $500,000 in sales. He has since closed his shop to do most of his business on eBay, selling to customers as far away as Belize and Alaska. He expects to do $3 million in sales this year, and much more profitably. EBay's commissions have potentially jumped from a few thousand dollars to $150,000.

Likewise, Dedicated Digital Technology partners Rail and Smith want to expand beyond just using eBay to save on supplies. They say their business plan this year calls for opening an eBay store of their own. "We don't know what we'll sell," Rail says. "We could sell machine tools, but we also have connections in the gold industry. There's too much money out there to not do it."

Repeat those stories just a few hundred times and the millions start rolling into eBay's coffers.

Today John Stack's company has made the transition from bricks to clicks, and business is cooking

John Stack's father started a business in Atlanta in 1973 selling new and used restaurant equipment, and Stack took over management of the company in the mid-1980s following his father's retirement. But by 1999 the business had gone into a decline, and Stack was getting close to deciding to close it down.

Then he discovered eBay.

After acquiring a lot of 50 coffeemakers from a chain store, Stack decided to auction them off on eBay, and they all sold for fair prices.

Stack's online business became so good that he closed down his brick-and-mortar operation and now sells solely through the Internet.

About one-third of sales now come from his own Web site (www.acitydiscount.com). The company site gives visitors access to all its products, including eBay items, but there's no discount for buying directly from the company site versus going through eBay. The company, called A City Discount, generated revenue of just $400,000 in 1999. But revenue rose to $1.4 million in 2002 and this year Stack said it is on track to realize $4 million. The company also grew from just four employees to 23 today.

"I know this venture into eBay saved us," Stack said. His company is the largest provider of used restaurant equipment on eBay, and the second-largest seller in the Business and Industrial section of eBay. (The category includes everything from agricultural tools to office supplies to scrap iron to welding equipment.)

Sales to small business

Stack is one of just many business owners doing business on eBay. About 20.4 million eBay users are employed in small businesses with less than 100 employees, and one out of every 10 items purchased on the auction site is earmarked for business use, according to an eBay small-business survey conducted in May.

Stack got involved with eBay the way many successful sellers do -- taking a physical store business and making goods available through the auction site.

"They started to experiment with eBay as a way to extend their existing sales channels," said Jay Fiore, director of business marketing for San Jose, Calif.-based eBay Inc. (Nasdaq: EBAY). "For others, they saw it as a way to effectively move used inventory or used equipment out of their inventory, so that they could offer their in-store customers an easier way to trade in and trade out to new equipment they were selling in their brick-and-mortar stores."

Even national giants such as Sears and IBM Corp. use eBay as a sales channel for excess or scratch-and-dent merchandise.

A City Discount has evolved into a major player in its niche within the world of virtual sales.

The company now caters to a worldwide market for restaurant equipment and supplies. From icemakers (his biggest seller) to commercial ovens and virtually anything else for food service, he has been able to move an ever-changing array of product through his 20,000-square-foot warehouse, where space is usually cramped, but nothing sticks around longer than a month.

All auctions now start at $1 and "whatever the customer is willing to pay is what we get," Stack said. In most cases, business on the site is brisk and prices rise quickly. Although most of his customers are in the restaurant business, almost 30 percent are consumers purchasing items for use in the home.

One of the primary attractions at Stack's auctions is a shipping calculator that allows buyers to figure transportation costs prior to bidding. With his high volume of orders, he has negotiated reduced rates with the major shippers.

Stack also markets several lines of new equipment. Sold at a discount, the items are shipped from the manufacturer. All products are also available at his "eBay store," a Web page within eBay's site devoted just to A City Discount. Approximately 100,000 individuals worldwide have set up similar e-commerce sites on the vast eBay Web portal, according to eBay spokesperson Cathleen Cronin.

When a buyer types "ice machine" or the name of some other piece of restaurant equipment into the eBay search engine, more than 12 percent of the returns will be for A City Discount's products. Typically, the items displayed on the screen will outnumber those of its largest competitor 8 to 1.

Ebay's Fiore said that he doesn't see any indication that the major companies see their brands being cheapened through selling on eBay. However, it has created problems for more conventional distributors who have struggled to figure out how to compete.

"[Large companies] need to approach [selling on] eBay in the right way," Fiore said. "It's most effective when they leverage eBay as a way to move goods that they've having trouble moving already. So we're not talking about in-season, brand-new goods for which there's already a very efficient distribution channel."

A few manufacturers have asked Stack to avoid selling their brands on eBay after getting complaints from other dealers who don't use the auction site.

One company, whose line he began selling in 2000, came to him last year and requested that he raise the price he was asking for the equipment on his auctions.

The company rep told him that when its own salesmen were calling on other dealers they were being greeted with, "Yes, I've seen your products on eBay and I can't sell them at that price."

"At least that guy in California, Texas or New York didn't say, 'Who are you? I've never heard of your brand,'" Stack said. "In essence, I've helped build his brand awareness."
